Shirley Heights

Overview

Shirley Heights is a historic military lookout and fortification located on the southern tip of the island of Antigua in the Caribbean. The site is situated on a hilltop overlooking the English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and neighboring islands. The fortification at Shirley Heights was originally built in the 18th century by the British Royal Navy as a strategic lookout point to protect the harbor and naval base from French invasion. Today, the site is a popular tourist destination and is renowned for its stunning views, particularly at sunset. Visitors to Shirley Heights can explore the ruins of the fortification, which include a series of cannons, gunpowder magazines, and stone ramparts. The site also features a number of restored buildings, including the Officers' Quarters, the Guard House, and the Powder Room, which now houses a museum dedicated to the history of the site.
